According to UNESCO, the number of museums around the world has increased from 22,000 in 1975 to 95,000 today. The American Alliance of Museums reported that in the United States alone, museums contribute the following:
- $50 billion to the U.S. economy each year
- 67% of all U.S. leisure travelers participate in cultural or heritage activities, such as visiting museums, spending 60% more money on average than other leisure travelers
- Over 726,000 American jobs
