There’s no doubt these are uncertain times for the travel and tourism industry. Organizations are canceling their events, visitors are postponing trips, and businesses are closing their doors to the public. Now more than ever, your community is turning to your website and social media channels, seeking updates on official notices and information on ways to continue supporting the local economy.
We’ve been inspired by many of you this past week who have moved quickly to respond to the COVID-19 situation and disperse important information to your respective communities. Below are just a few examples of tactics you may be able to implement for your own destination:
- Create a page on your destination website to keep your community informed. Many DMOs, including Visit Augusta, have added pages to their site to house information and updates regarding COVID-19. These pages may express concern for public safety and offer suggestions for outdoor activities that adhere to social distancing best practices.
- Use your social platforms to support local businesses. It goes without saying that these are extraordinarily difficult times for small businesses. With owners closing their doors, there are still a number of ways to support the local community, including purchasing gift cards from local shops, tuning in to live workout classes and purchasing to-go food options from local restaurants. DMOs such as Visit Tucson have created highlights on their Instagram pages to direct people to restaurants that are accepting to-go orders.
- Update your restaurant listings. Another way to support your local community, now is the time to update your restaurant listings to reflect accurate information on whether a business is temporarily closed, open for takeout or offering delivery service.
