According to a recent survey conducted by travel.aarp.org, United States citizens in the "Baby Boomer" demographic seem to be dominating the travel industry with what they refer to as "Celebration Vacations." There is no denying that with over 76 billion people in this generation (that's 35% of the U.S. population), we should be paying attention to them.
The findings of the survey conducted indicate that 48% of celebration vacationers considered travel to celebrate a milestone, compared to throwing a party or purchasing a big ticket item like jewelry. These milestones were things like anniversaries or birthdays and over 53% chose destinations right here in the U.S.!
forbes.com posted an article last summer that indicates the same trend, and aarp.com stated that 78% of Baby Boomers surveyed will take a Celebration Vacation within the next two years, indicating that this is a trend that will stand the test of time. Here are just a few of the top trends in Boomer travel according to Forbes:
ECOTOURISM
The U.N. World Tourism Organization predicts there will be some 1.6 billion eco-inspired trips taken by 2020. Travelers with green on their minds seek out trips where they can directly contribute to the local economy and environment.
ADVENTURE
Kayaking, cycling, hiking, scuba diving, skiing, mountain climbing - is enjoying popularity among the 50+ crowd. You would do well to add more packages that specifically target the wild side of this generation.
BUCKET LIST
Boomers are at the age where they feel young, but they are aware of that ticking clock. For some it's about visiting an ancestor's homeland, for others it's exotic destinations and finally taking their dream trip. There are many inspirations for Boomers to take the plunge and finally take the trip of a lifetime, so make sure you are targeting that desire.
