Account Manager Andrew McLeod chose to attend a large and well-known industry conference with his PED, the Destination Marketing Association International annual convention. The DMAI Annual is a top informational and networking event for destination marketing and management professionals, featuring educational sessions and keynote speakers.

Andrew chose to use the experience primarily to network and work. Realizing the importance of this vital industry event to Simpleview and his clients, Andrew wanted to experience it firsthand, and to use the opportunity to build client relationships and interact with executive staff at various destinations. He enthusiastically worked with the sales team at the Simpleview booth in the Minneapolis Convention Center to offer strong representation to our clients. Impressed with the sheer scale of the event (there were more than 1,500 in attendance), he took advantage of every networking opportunity he could, from the opening reception at the U.S. Bank Stadium to the Simpleview party in the Hyatt Minneapolis Prairie Kitchen and Bar. This face time with clients and travel and tourism experts was a definite benefit to his position, which requires quite a bit of customer interaction and industry knowledge to coordinate projects and accounts.

Andrew was also intrigued to experience the excitement generated by Don Welsh, named the new President & CEO of DMAI in January, and his team, and to learn more about their goals for DMAI in the future. Don and his team were involved in improving this year's DMAI event and Don was in attendance, kicking off the affair and conducting interviews.

Working the Simpleview booth at DMAI further helped Andrew see how another department right here at Simpleview works as part of the whole. "Marketing did a GREAT job of organizing everything and coming up with creative ways to draw clients in."

Overall, Andrew was impressed with the experience and looks forward to attending DMAI Annual 2017 in Montreal, Quebec in July. "I will likely attend next year for PED, but it's such a good opportunity I hope that it is standard for all Account Managers to attend and network with client leadership moving forward," he said.

Takeaways

  • Now that I know what opportunities there are first hand, next time I'll set up more meetings further in advance.
  • I look forward to sharing my experience with my department so we can get the most out of our investment as a team.
